Bread Furst

4434 Coonnecticut Ave. NW Washington, DC 20008 (Directions)

We are open from 8 am to 4 pm every day and will try as much as we can to fill our customers’ and the neighborhood’s needs.

We are changing the foods we offer for sale to meet the culinary needs of all who are staying in your homes.  So we will add even greater diversity to the breads and pastries and spreads and foods ready to cook and eat:  More soups, more spreads for breads, and more grocery items.

We are going to increase the diversity of what we buy from Earth and Eats, the Pennsylvania farm/coop  that itself is suffering from the loss of restaurants that buy its wonderful produce.  We’ll make that available for you to buy at Bread Furst.  If you see something you like but don’t know how to cook it, send us an email and we’ll respond with a recipe.

If you need delivery of foods or know people in the neighborhood (a mile around Bread Furst) who need delivery, we will respond by bringing your order to you – or to them.

Bread Furst opened in May, 2014, a neighborhood bakery in the upper northwest neighborhood called Van Ness/Forest Hills. It makes and sells traditional breads and pastries, original and specialty foods.

The breadline is mostly European, baguettes, ciabatta, and a range of whole grain breads. They are made in the traditional ways with pre-ferments and are long-fermented, hand-shaped and baked on a stone deck oven. All are made from organic grains.

The foods range from salads and soups made fresh each day, often grain- and vegetable-centered, seasonal and made as much as possible from ingredients grown in the Virginia-Maryland-Pennsylvania. We make some foods for taking out – macaroni and cheese, stews, and spreads for breads.

Desserts are American-oriented although we allow a few Frenchified pastries like croissants to sneak through. We offer an abundance of muffins, cookies, pies, cakes, bars, and ice cream as well.

On our shelves are stocked with specialty items we like – a bit of ham and smoked salmon, jams and pickles, cheeses and drinks, many items that we like and want to offer.

Although certainly we are primarily a bakery, Bread Furst is above all a neighborhood store, rooted here, with what we hope is an intimate connection with Washington.
